It was a Tuesday night in Lanham, MD, and I'd been driving around the same six blocks for twenty minutes looking for parking. Not exaggerating. Twenty minutes.

On my third loop, I passed the same driveway I'd passed twice already. Empty. Always empty. The house behind it was dark, like whoever lived there wasn't even home.

That was the moment. Not some big lightning bolt idea, just pure annoyance mixed with a simple thought: why is this space just sitting here while I'm burning gas looking for one exactly like it?

I mentioned it to a friend the next day, half complaining, half joking. Turns out she'd had the same thought about her own driveway. She works from home most days and her driveway sits empty from 9 to 5. "I'd honestly rent that out if it were easy," she said.

So we started asking around Lanham. Turns out almost everyone has a version of this story. A garage nobody parks in. A lot that's empty on weekends. A driveway that's just there, doing nothing, every single day.

And on the other side, drivers circling blocks, paying too much at garages, or parking six streets away from where they actually need to be.

The space already exists. It always has. What's missing is just a simple way to connect the person who has it with the person who needs it, without it being complicated or sketchy or a hassle for either side.

That's how Parking Mate started, right there in Lanham, Maryland, with two people and a shared annoyance.

What we didn't expect was how fast it would spread. We started getting messages from people in other cities asking if Parking Mate worked where they lived. It didn't yet. So we expanded, one city at a time.

Today, that one driveway in Lanham has turned into a nationwide network. We're in New York and Los Angeles, where a single parking spot can be the difference between a good day and a stressful one. In Chicago, Houston, and Phoenix, where downtown blocks fill up fast every morning. In Philadelphia, San Antonio, and San Diego, where neighborhoods are packed but driveways sit empty all day. In Dallas, Austin, and Jacksonville, where the city keeps growing faster than the parking can keep up. In San Jose, Fort Worth, Columbus, Charlotte, and Indianapolis. In San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, and Washington D.C., where visitors and commuters are always looking for a spot close by. In Boston, and in the smaller cities and college towns most people have never heard of, all the way back to where it started.

The problem was never unique to Lanham. Every city has the same two things happening at once: empty space and people who need it. We just kept connecting the dots, city by city, until it became coast to coast.

And it's still growing. Every driveway, garage, lot, or storage space that gets listed makes the whole thing work a little better for everyone nearby. That's the honest pitch: if you've got space sitting empty, someone near you probably needs exactly that. Adding your space takes a few minutes. Being part of what makes your neighborhood work smarter takes even less.

We didn't build this to be clever. We built it because we were annoyed in a driveway in Lanham, and it turns out people from coast to coast were annoyed too. Sometimes the best ideas aren't about building something new. They're about paying attention to what's already sitting right in front of you, and then sharing it, wherever you happen to be.
